How to approach
Name the group that most of the words belong to (fruits, cities of Tamil Nadu, snakes ...). The word that falls outside that group is the answer. Look for the most specific group that fits exactly three words.
Check whether three of the words are parts of something. If they are, the odd one out is often the whole thing itself, or a word that is not a part at all.
For units, ask what each one measures (length, time, volume, money). For describing words, compare meanings: three will be close in meaning and one will differ or be the opposite.
When the words are all the same kind of thing, look at what they do (write or erase), a property (can you see through it?), or a number fact (days in a month, sides of a shape).
5 solved Verbal Classification questions
Find the odd one out.
Solution — answer D
Mango, guava and papaya are fruits; carrot is a vegetable.
3 steps · reveal one at a timeStep 1: Understand the Goal
We need to find the item that doesn't fit with the others in the given list. This often involves identifying a common category or characteristic that most items share.
Step 2: Examine First Items
Let's look at the first three items: mango, guava, and papaya. Think about what these items have in common. They are all types of fruits.
Step 3: The Answer
Now consider the last item, carrot. A carrot is a vegetable. Since mango, guava, and papaya are fruits, carrot is the odd one out. So the answer is (D) carrot.

Let's look at each word given: cornea, retina, iris, and lens. These are all specific terms related to biology or anatomy. Do you know what they refer to?
Step 2: Identify the common theme
These words are not general items, nor are they types of diseases or spectacles. They are all components of a particular sensory organ. Think about where you might encounter these terms.

Look at the words given: rose, jasmine, lotus. What do these words have in common? Think about their category or type.
Step 2: Find the Rule
All the words - rose, jasmine, and lotus - are types of flowers. This is the common characteristic that defines the group.
Step 3: Check the Options
Now, we need to find an option that also fits this rule. We are looking for another word that is a type of flower.
Step 4: The answer
So the answer is (B) marigold. Marigold is a type of flower, just like rose, jasmine, and lotus, fitting the group's characteristic.
Which option correctly identifies the odd one out, and why? apple, banana, cabbage, grapes
Solution — answer B
Cabbage is a vegetable while apple, banana and grapes are fruits. Bananas also grow in bunches, and apples and grapes are eaten raw, so the other reasons are false.
4 steps · reveal one at a timeStep 1: List the items
We are given four items: apple, banana, cabbage, and grapes. Our task is to identify which one is the odd one out and explain why.
Step 2: Consider categories
Let's think about common ways to categorize these items. A very common distinction for food items like these is whether they are a fruit or a vegetable.
Step 3: Apply the rule
An apple is a fruit. A banana is a fruit. Grapes are also fruits. However, cabbage is a vegetable. This creates a clear difference between cabbage and the other three items.
Step 4: The answer
So the answer is (B) Cabbage — it is a vegetable; the others are fruits. This is the most accurate and consistent reason for cabbage being the odd one out.
